In The Aftermath

A new show I’ve been watching lately started out in a coastal city that got hit by a hurricane. As you can imagine, there was a bunch of damage. Trees broken, power lines down, roofs torn up, the works. But instead of freaking out and rushing to fix everything, they went fishing. Rather than panicking, they remembered just how lucky they were to be safe. They relaxed. They laid back and simply enjoyed life.
We have been through a crazy year. Just when you think it's over, another wave comes crashing over your head. It may seem like everything around you is being torn to shreds, but God still has you. Even when life is blowing you in every direction, God is still holding you steady. In the storm, He is in control.
One of the main stories I think of when studying this is Matthew 8:23-27. In this chapter, Jesus and the disciples are on a boat, heading out into a lake, when a storm hits. On the main deck, the disciples are freaking out. But just a few feet below, Jesus is asleep. Jesus found the calm in the chaos. He laid down and trusted that God had it under control.
When a storm hits, what do you do in the aftermath? Do you panic and run to fix everything? Or do you relax and let God take control?
My word for this year is peace. Praying into this year, that is what God gave me. Peace. But if you haven't noticed, there isn't a lot of that present. Life has hit us head on with a lot of storms this year. Let's be honest, our world seems torn to shreds right now. If we're being real, peace seems so far out of reach. But even in the midst of the storms, there is peace. When the winds are rushing against you and you can't see through the rain, there is peace. The boat you're in may be rocking, but there's still peace. Peace is a promise God will always keep.
